The House of Representatives approved articles of impeachment on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress against Donald Trump on December 18th, 2019. The witch-hunt trial lasted until February 5th, 2020, when President Trump was acquitted on all counts.
While these shenanigans were going on, China was working hard to bury evidence that a deadly disease was rampaging through the Wuhan province. They lied to the international community, including the World Health Organization, to cover up the mounting infections and fatalities caused by what is now known as COVID-19.
Did the Chinese coverup work because the United States was preoccupied with Impeachment? President Trump addressed this sentiment during a press conference at the White House.
“Well, I don’t like to think I did,” the President answered when asked if he thought Impeachment distracted him from acting earlier on COVID-19. “I think I handled it very well, but I guess it probably did.”
Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell told the Hugh Hewitt Show that he agreed with the President. He claims Impeachment did delay the government response to COVID-19.
“I think it diverted the attention of the government, because everything every day was all about impeachment,” McConnell said.
And he is right. From December 18th, 2019 to February 5th, 2020 there were over 1,000 articles written about impeachment on major news publications alone. How many were written about COVID-19? Zero. I found zero mentions of COVID-19 on major news publications during that time.
Would the US have been better positioned to deal with COVID-19 had they not been focused on Impeachment? We may never know. But I think we can all agree we would have been better off preparing for the disease instead of attacking a President over a politically normal phone call with Ukraine. Maybe Nancy Pelosi will think twice before distracting our government with political nonsense in the future.
